Ford Developing a New, Less Expensive Hybrid

The American automaker is developing an all new hybrid powertrain for their Ford Fusion that will increase in mpg gallon output, while becoming less expensive. How are they going to make this happen? Upcoming models available at Koons Ford in Annapolis, MD in the near future, will offer this hybrid powertrain engine that (according to Ford) will cost 30 percent less1
How is Ford going to accomplish this? Well, for starters they will be using not one, but two engines!
Ford's hybrid system actually utilizes two electric motors -- one as a generator, the other one to drive the car. Linked to the gas engine is a gearset, called a "torque-split device." This acts as a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and diverts power between the gas engine and the electric motor.
Gossip across the internet suggests this new powertrain could be put into use as soon as 2012, though it is more probable that Ford will test it for longer, and have it in production models before 2014 - 2015.
